Ask The State Department To Reject The Keystone XL Pipeline

Although President Obama wisely rejected the Keystone pipeline back in January, TransCanada has now submitted a new proposal to build its disastrous pipeline. Help ensure that the State Department does a full environmental review that accounts for the proposed pipeline's effects on our air, water, land, climate and the many communities it would cut through.

Dear Secretary Clinton,

I'm writing to urge you to keep President Obama's promise to do a thorough environmental review of the revised proposal for the northern portion of the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline submitted by TransCanada and reject this dangerous project.

This dirty pipeline would put the water supply of millions of Americans at risk, hasten the destruction of Canada's boreal forest, and worsen the climate crisis -- without lowering gas prices or increasing U.S. energy security. With the effects of climate change already causing hardship to families across America, we simply can't afford to let this polluting pipeline through.

TransCanada's revised proposal constitutes an entirely new project and must get a new, thorough and honest review before any decision on it is made. I ask that you do a detailed investigation into the impacts on nearby communities and on long-term climate change given that tar sands create even more global warming pollution than traditional oil production.

After the number of tar sands pipeline spills we have seen -- including 12 spills in the Keystone 1 pipeline's first year and the disastrous Kalamazoo spill two years ago this month -- we can't risk another corrosive tar sands pipeline crossing these waters.  I urge you to do an accurate review of the spill risk given Keystone 1's track record. I also ask that you account for the boreal forest destruction that will be hastened by this pipeline and recognize that the new fuel economy standards eliminate the need for additional tar sands pipelines.
